Gardening Chick

Gardening!  Ahhhhhhhhh - there's few things that make me happier than hanging out on my deck with camera in one hand and a Diet Peach Snapple in the other and taking it all in!  Of course, this part comes AFTER all the hard work it took to get to this point.

Since I have a small yard, and what I do have is tiered, I'm limited as to the structure of my gardens.  I call them perimeter gardens because, basically, they are along the perimeters of the first tier.  Picture it as a 3-sided box.  On the left side I have my garden path that leads to a gate to the front yard.  Along this path I have Hellebore, Bearded Irises, Foxglove (Digitalis), Trandescantia (Spider Wort), Shasta Daisies, Echinacea (Purple Coneflower), Centurea Montana, Gooseneck Loosestrife, Sedum, Coral Bells (Heuchera), Hens 'n Chicks, Mertensia (Virginia Bluebells), Lamium, Chameleon Plant (Houtynia), Aster, Asclepias (Butterfly Weed), Coreopsis, Hosta, Delphinium, Fountain Grass, Miniature Rose, Morning Glories, Crocosmia 'Lucifer', Zebra Grass, Dianthus, Echevaria, and assorted garden art.

Along the middle I have pots of zinnias, coleus and tomatoes, Echinops, Black-eyed Susan, Echinacea, miniature Wisteria, Agastache, common and Japanese Honeysuckle, Dutch Iris, Orange Daylilies, Oriental Lilies, hanging baskets of Verbena, White & Purple Coneflower, Clematis, Miniature Rose, Carver's Root, Scarlet Bee Balm, Garden Phlox, Stella Dore Daylilies, Liatris, Yarrow, and Liriope.

Down the right side, I do not have many flowers.  We've created a privacy screen with Aborvitea, Scotch pines and Rose of Sharron.  This year I planted a patch of Marsh Milkweed as well for the Monarch Butterflies.

Along the front of the deck I alternate Astilbe with Foxglove and Fernleaf Bleeding Hearts.  On the deck railing I have New Guinea Impatiens.  I change them up every couple years and in the past, have planted Verbena, Geraniums & Petunias.

The annuals vary from year-to-year, depending on my mood and availability.  In spring Pansies are a must!  There's always room for Petunias,Lantana, Impatiens, Salvia, etc.

And, of course, there's the front yard in all its glory! Rhodos, Weeping Cherry, Weeping Japanese Maple, Lilac, Hosta, Coral Bells, Salvia, Hydrangea, Peonies, Scented Geraniums, Fuschia, Azalea, and around the lightpost area is my scented garden:  Miniature Lilac, Knock-out Roses, Lavender, Lantana & Boxwood.

Mixed in among all the above are bird feeders, birdhouses, bird baths, trellises, obelisks, statuary, spinners and whirligigs, solar lights, garden art, and of course, faeries!
